Lash Lift vs Lash Extensions: Which Course Should You Learn First?

Lash Lift vs Lash Extensions: Which Course Should You Learn First?

If you're thinking about starting a career in lashes, one question comes up more than any other: should I learn lash lifts or lash extensions first?

Both are in-demand treatments. Both can be done from home or in a salon. And both can become a real income. But they're very different services: different skills, different set-up, different appointment lengths and different types of clients. Choosing the right one to start with can help you get earning sooner and build confidence faster.

After 20+ years in the industry and over 28,000 students trained, here's our honest breakdown to help you decide.

What's the Difference Between a Lash Lift and Lash Extensions?

A lash lift works with your client's own natural lashes. The lashes are shaped over a shield and processed so they hold a lifted curl, then usually tinted for a darker, mascara-like finish. A good lash lift lasts around 6–8 weeks and needs no maintenance appointments in between.

Lash extensions involve bonding individual synthetic lashes (or handmade fans, for volume) onto each natural lash. Clients can choose anything from a soft, natural classic set to a full, dramatic volume look. Because natural lashes shed, clients come back for infills, usually every 2–3 weeks.

In short: a lash lift enhances what's already there, while extensions add length, fullness and drama.

Which Is Quicker to Learn?

Lash lifts are generally the quicker skill to pick up. The steps are clear, the treatment is shorter, and once you understand shield selection, lash placement and processing, you can start taking clients quickly. With our Lash Lift & Dye Course, students can start taking paying clients in as little as 7 days.

Lash extensions take more practice. You're building fine motor skills such as isolation, tweezer control, glue control and placement, and those come with time on the mannequin. With our Classic Lash Extension Course, students can start taking paying clients in as little as 30 days.

Neither is "hard" if you're trained properly. Extensions simply need more hours of practice before you're client-ready.

How Do You Practise and Get Certified?

This is a difference a lot of beginners don't realise:

  • Lash extension exams can be completed on a mannequin head, so you can practise and submit your work without needing a model straight away.
  • Lash lift exams are completed on a real model, because you're working with natural lashes. A friend, family member or partner is perfect.

Every Lash Prodigy assessment is marked with personalised feedback, so you know exactly what you're doing well and what to tweak.

Set-Up and Kit

Lash lifting has a small, simple kit: shields, solutions, glue or balm, a lift tool and tint. It's compact, easy to store and a low-cost way to start.

Lash extensions need a bit more: lash trays, adhesive, primer, quality tweezers, eye pads, tape and a fan or nano mister. You'll also want a comfortable lash bed and good lighting, as your clients will be lying down for longer.

Our courses can be purchased with a kit or without a kit. All our courses are brand-friendly, so you can use your own products if you already have them.

Appointments and Income

Lash lifts are quick appointments, which makes them easy to fit around school runs, a day job or other treatments. Clients typically rebook every 6–8 weeks, and lifts are a popular add-on for brow clients too.

Lash extensions are longer appointments (a full set takes a couple of hours), but the regular infills every 2–3 weeks create loyal, recurring clients who book again and again. That steady rebooking is what helps many artists build a fully booked lash business.

So Which Should You Learn First?

Start with lash lifts if you:

  • Want to start earning as quickly as possible
  • Have limited time and want shorter appointments
  • Want a low-cost, compact set-up
  • Already do brows (lifts and brow lamination are the perfect pair)
  • Love the natural, low-maintenance look

Start with lash extensions if you:

  • Love detailed, creative work and styling
  • Want regular, recurring clients through infills
  • Prefer practising on a mannequin before working on people
  • Want to offer a premium, high-impact service
  • Are happy to put in the practice hours to master your technique

Why Not Both?

Many of our most successful students offer both, because they suit different clients. Some clients want the drama of extensions, while others want a natural, no-fuss lift. Offering both means you never have to turn a client away.

A popular path is to start with lifts to begin earning quickly, then add extensions as your confidence grows. Or start with extensions and add lifts as a quick, profitable extra service.
